I've been generally worried about kindergarten for at least a year now... And even more so when we found out a few months ago that Allen would be going all day. And more still when we found out that the school's full-time gifted program teacher was leaving, to be replaced by a woman who will split her time between our school and another. Would kindergarten end up being just a "lost year" for a kiddo who already reads Science magazine and does 100s math in his head?
Well, I'm still worried. But it has been great getting back to Sorrento and seeing the friendly faces we know and trust from Emilyn's time there -- and hearing their reassurances that, yes, there will be a place for Allen. He seems to really like Mrs. Grossman and Mrs. Lupo, so that's a big relief. And there will be exciting science curriculum as part of the full day, so YAY!
It was also a relief to me to see him take each element of the screening and kind of elevate it to his level. All Mrs. Lupo wanted him to do was cut out a circle. But Allen told her he was cutting it into "eighths" and making a puzzle out of it! OK, buddy!
Of course, it will be a serious adjustment for him. It's the first time he'll be going to school every day, for starters. And now he'll be spending all day there, eating lunch, going to gym and all the other routines that will take some getting used to. Let's hope he can get some time during all that to be himself and explore what makes him happy, and at his own pace. We shall see!
